A wind mitigation inspection records your home's hurricane-resistant features, like roof deck nailing, roof-to-wall straps, roof shape and window protection, on Florida's OIR-B1-1802 form. Insurers must offer premium credits for those features, so the inspection can lower your bill, especially after a new roof. It pairs well with any roof leak repair or re-roof.
What a wind mitigation inspection checks
| Feature | What it means |
|---|---|
| Roof covering | Whether the roof meets the newer building code |
| Roof deck attachment | How the plywood is nailed to the rafters |
| Roof-to-wall connection | Toe nails, clips, or single or double hurricane straps |
| Roof shape | Hip roofs resist wind better than gables |
| Secondary water barrier | A sealed roof deck that stops water if shingles blow off |
| Opening protection | Impact windows, shutters and rated doors |
How it saves money
Florida Statute 627.0629 requires insurers to offer credits for features that reduce wind losses. The inspection is how your insurer learns you have them. Upgrades like a sealed roof deck, better deck nailing and hurricane straps are easiest to add when you re-roof.
My Safe Florida Home
The state's My Safe Florida Home program has offered free inspections and matching grants of up to $10,000 for approved upgrades. Recent rounds limited eligibility by income, and mobile homes aren't covered. Check the program site for current funding before you apply.
When to get one
- After a re-roof or major roof repair
- When you buy a home
- Before renewing your policy, if you've never had one
- Before hurricane season, alongside the hurricane roof checklist
Related: the Florida 15-year roof rule. A wind mitigation inspection is one of the few things that can actively bring a Florida premium down.
